In this blog we give a bit of history about one of Australia’s earliest safe manufacturing companies being the AJAX SAFE CO, a bygone name well known in the safe industry. Their fire and thief resisting safes, strongroom doors and grilles are still found throughout Australia. Testament to the craftsmanship of the AJAX SAFE CO safe makers at the time, their safes and strongroom doors are still operating as they were intended to at the time they were made.
The Ajax Safe Co was established in Darlington, Sydney in 1890 and the prime reason was to manufacture Australian safes, strongroom doors and grilles equal or better than anything imported. Ajax Safe Co was very successful and Ajax Safes were in constant demand from private homes and businesses. They received excellent testimonials from the users at the time. A sample of a testimonial from 1909:
After a huge fire in the George Street North Post office, the deputy P.M.G at the time reported that the Ajax Safe Co Safe that was installed protected all the contents during the fire. When the safe was located in the fire debris a week later, it had fallen 50 feet to the ground level. As the intense heat of the fire completely destroyed the entire premises and where the Ajax Safe was standing at the time was next to cast iron pipes that were melted in the heat. The Ajax Safe contained the company’s books and valuables, when it was opened the contents were found to be in perfect condition.
Many other similar examples of high praise testimonials could be found as quoted on the Ajax Safe Co Safes. In their peak times, Ajax Safe co supplied two thousand Ajax safes to the Federal and State Governments, 150 Ajax safes to numerous Shires and Municipal Councils, and 50 Ajax strongroom doors to Post Offices. Other users of the Ajax Safe Co included The Treasury strong room Canberra and the Federal Capital, fitted with Ajax safes and Ajax strongroom doors.
The Ajax safes body and door were constructed of the best steel plate. The fire resistant material (also known as the fire chamber fill) used in the safe was the purest steam-generating composition. The locking mechanism used on the Ajax safes and Ajax safe strongroom doors was a 6 lever unpickable and explosive proof lock.
To follow are many fine samples of the Ajax Safe Co safes that can still be found in Australia now, still working perfectly today as the day they were made. Take a closer look at the detail of craftsmanship of the Ajax Safe makers at the time and the quality of the materials they used to produce a high quality Ajax Safe.
